A Rookie’s Guide to the Folk Fest

So, as shameful as it might be to admit, I am a Folk Fest virgin.

That’s right, I have lived in Calgary for the majority of my lifetime, and yet I’ve never actually gotten around to attending Folk Fest before. The cost has always been a bit of a holdup, and I’ve never paid enough attention to get on the ball for early bird tickets. Not to mention, I didn’t have a crew to go with, and I figured that Folking alone wouldn’t be all that much fun.

This year, I have a crew of veteran Folkies to lead the way, and I’m looking forward to seeing my first Folk Festival. I’m learning all sorts of new terms, like ‘tarpies’, ‘runners’ and ‘mules’, and I’ve been pouring over the band listing. There are a few that I’m really looking forward to seeing – like Cat Empire, Alabama Shakes, CCR and Mexican Institute of Sound – but I’m hearing that as awesome as the main stage performances can be, the side stages that combine a few different acts can be a whole lotta fun.

I’m really looking forward to it – I have my legless camping chair, we dug a tarp out of the basement, and we’re ready to roll tomorrow night. We’ll be live tweeting from the shows, and we’ll let you know if something amazing is happening – follow us on Twitter at @yycmusic!
