Sled Island is officially here! After a great kick off party last night at the Commonwealth, I know I can’t wait to get my “Sled” on. With so money bands and venues, choosing who to see can become an adventure of it’s own.
Tonight’s schedule is offering some huge acts. People are buzzing about Swans, who are playing tonight at Dickens; so much buzz that tickets have already sold out. Formed in 1982, Swans were a part of a short-lived yet inspired New York “no wave” scene – a rejection of the commercialized “New Wave”. You can expect an experimental sound, with driving rhythms and less focus on melody. Swans reunited in 2010, after breaking up in 1997. This show will be coveted. Go early, you don’t want to miss this.
If you can’t get in to Swans, another interesting act is Colin Stetson, a touring member of Arcade Fire, Bell Orchetstre and Bon Iver. He is a horn player and song writer, and has been putting out solo records since 2008. He was recently nominated for the Polaris Music Prize. Known for his emotional song writing, extrrodanairy music ability and unique voice, you won’t be disappointed. He is playing tonight at the Commonwealth.
A lot of buzz is also swirling around the Unknown Mortal Orchestra. Receiving high praise from Pitchfork, and appearing on The Jimmy Fallon Show this winter, this band is living up to the hype through their music, which is an eccentric mix of garage. psych and funk. You can catch them tonight at Broken City.
