Calgary Artists Support Cry of the Streets

sasAs someone who cares about social issues and loves music, I am always up for an event that incorporates both. The Servant’s Anonymous Society of Calgary (SAS) is hosting an evening of music and education, with a few appies and drinks, of course. The event named “Cry of the Streets” costs $75 and you can check out some great local music, with all proceeds going directly to SAS. The entertainment for the evening includes Calgary favourites Jocelyn and Lisa, Ceilia Rose, and Justine Tyrell.

Jocelyn and Lisa have been creating quite a buzz in Calgary these days, and since pairing up in 2011, these ladies have become a force to be reckoned with. According to their bio, each had impressive solo careers prior to forming the band. “Jocelyn… land(ed) a publishing deal, and her songs played on the hit shows One Tree Hill and Pretty Little Liars. Studio producers, Russell Broom and Mitch Lee, hired Jocelyn as a session vocalist to record songs for the hit movie Dear Santa, as well as for nation-wide commercials. She also recently shared the stage with Mos Def.”

As a bassist, Lisa has toured across North America and internationally. “Her groove-ability in all styles solidified her reputation as a sought-after musician. She has shared the stage with Bedouin Soundclash, Theory of a Deadman, Los Lobos, Emerson Drive and many others.”

They are beautiful song writers with an unique sound. Jocelyn has an amazing voice and is accompanied by Lisa who plays bass and piano. Their sound is so rich, it’s hard to believe that it’s just the two of them.

Celia Rose is another beautiful songwriter, originally from Alabama. Having lived around the world, she has an eclectic sound with an amazing talent as a song writer.  According to her bio, she once was a part of the band Wrapped in Rain, and she toured throughout Europe, and acted as Cultural Ambassadors for the U.S. State Department on a tour of Africa that included South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, Madagascar, Togo, Morocco, Rwanda and Burundi.

At only 22 years old, Justine Tyrell has a mature sound for her years. With inspirations like Frank Sinatra, Amy Winehouse and Michael Buble, she aims for a bluesy soulful sound. She has played several events around Calgary and area and was named one of Calgary’s cultural ambassador in 2012 by Fashion Calgary.

Along with an amazing line up of music, National Advocate and Canadian sex traffic survivor Natasha Falle will also be speaking at the event, providing an opportunity to learn how these issues directly impact Canadian women.

According to SAS, their mission is to “provide long-term programs, ongoing support, hope and wholeness to women, ages 16 and over, with or without children, who are victims of, or are at risk of, sexual exploitation (including prostitution and human trafficking).” Their services also include SAFE House, which offers an immediate exit from violence and dangerous, sexually exploitive situations. “This includes girls and women (and their children) experiencing homelessness, escaping traffickers, leaving hospital or jail, and seeking an exit and recovery from sex trade, prostitution, trauma, and addiction.”

If you want to support the amazing work that SAS does as well as enjoy some amazing talent you can get tickets through Servants Anonymous.
