No Stress For 10@10 Participants

We got an email from a reader named Lauri, who says “I think Rebecca Janz and Kid Mufasa need a review. Great young hip hop artists. I saw them perform at 10@10 on April 4th. They were unreal! Their CBC web site is http://music.cbc.ca/#/artists/Rebecca-Kid-Mufasa. Also Rebecca has a SoundCloud page here: https://soundcloud.com/#rebecca-janz. Keep the awesome coming!”

It’s quite a mix of musical talents – Rebecca’s strong voice with Mufasa’s raps makes for a pretty phenomenal combination. Lyrically, it’s strong and it moves to a solid beat. Think of a young, local version of the Dido/Eminem collaboration, but with more deep-groove soul from the female vocals, and more old-school flavour in the rap segment. Maybe the fantasy duo of Stephanie Moraille (Bran Van 3000) and Maestro Fresh Wes would be a more apt (but definitely a little dated) comparison. No word from what I can see about upcoming live shows, but there is a promised debut album release for July; we’d love to revisit the duo then and see what they’re releasing.

For those of you who haven’t checked out 10@10 yet, it’s a monthly event where local hip-hop, rap, R&B singers and producers are given a chance to collaborate, share and bring da noize. You might sense a theme here – each performer gets a ten minute set to share their work; there are ten acts booked per event; the show goes on at ten PM… you can check out their Facebook page for details on the next upcoming event, and find out live and in person which act will be selected each month for a feature with HipHopCanada.com. If you want to take part, send them an email at 10at10showcase@gmail.com.
